Looking for a meaningful and educational day trip in the Bay Area? Head to Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California, a place that celebrates the people who powered America during World War II.

Unlike most war memorials, this park doesn’t focus on generals or battlefields. Instead, it tells the story of the millions of workers, especially women, who kept the country running while soldiers fought overseas. These were the welders, riveters, nurses, cooks, engineers, and families who turned factories and shipyards into engines of victory.
At the Visitor Education Center, you can step into that history through immersive exhibits, films, and life-sized displays that share real stories from the people who lived them. You’ll see how the war changed not just industry, but society, opening new opportunities for women and reshaping the American workplace. Outside, take a walk along the Richmond waterfront to explore the actual historic sites.
Visit the Kaiser Shipyards, where thousands of workers built ships at record speed; the Ford Assembly Plant, once used for tank production; and the SS Red Oak Victory, a restored WWII ship you can tour in person. Each stop offers a glimpse into the incredible teamwork and resilience that defined the home front.
So next time you’re looking for something new to explore, grab a friend, take a short trip to Richmond, and experience a piece of history that changed America from the ground up.
