What Makes TED Talks Inspiring?

After the workshop, we spoke to Daniel Sevall, Lincoln University Faculty, to ask him a question that most of his students wonder, “Why do you believe in starting your classes with a TED talk as a booster?” His answer may enlighten you!

Daniel Sevall

We live in an amazing time in world history where we have access to so much information. As with anything, context is important. TED (Technology, Environment and Design) Talks provide the viewer a quick synopsis into the perspective of someone who has typically researched a given topic in depth. Moreover, these videos are generally no longer than 20 minutes in length, which arguably, provides the uninitiated the ideal time to be introduced to a given concept. While not a replacement for academic study, TED Talks offer a starting point for discussion, and from my humble perspective, has enriched my classroom experience.

5 Tips to Improve Your Presentations

1. Be simple and clear

2. Say something unexpected

3. Provide specific details (don’t be vague)

4. Have a message that is credible and believable

5. Use stories to engage people’s emotions
